Exhibition - Bricks

Bricks can tell a lot about themselves. Their size and regularity, for example, tell us how and when they were made; the color of the bricks indicates where the clay might have been mined and therefore where it was produced. The most important feature is the brick mark (printed letters, numbers, signs), which indicates a particular kiln as the producer of the brick.

The creation and existence of Riga's beautiful, historically and architecturally valuable buildings is like a coin with two sides. On the obverse side there will always be the architect of the building, its commissioner or owner, its famous inhabitants and the events that have taken place in the building. The reverse, on the other hand, is rarely seen or of interest to anyone: it is the craftsmen who built the building, the manufacturers and suppliers of the materials.

The exhibition Bricks will present bricks made in Latvia between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century from several private collections.
