Solo exhibition "At the End of the Hair" by painter Mārīte Guščika

The theme of the exhibition "At the End of the Hair" is movement and time, which is elusive and unfixable. The moment as a reference point that determines the course of events, where in a hundredth of a second everything can become different.

In this exhibition, a plastic line has become the dominant expression, around which the space of the paintings is formed. Swirls of movement and tangles of lines create contrasting bursts that can symbolise both physical and emotional processes, suggesting the transience of one's existence. The presence of shadows on seemingly ephemeral objects is significant, suggesting the presence of space. The gesture of painting has become unpredictable in many of the works, inviting the viewer to focus on the smallest lines. The works are imbued with tense mystical moods, most of the action taking place in the dark - something is about to happen. The world of Marite Guščik's characters is visually unrecognisable, yet the imagery she creates is so seductive that it seems that a moment more of delving into it will allow one to recognise some of the known matter of the world.
