On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the legendary Latvian painter Eduards Kalniņš, the Daugava Gallery has published a large-scale album featuring paintings by the artist, photographs from the family archive and photographs by Kalniņš himself. The album also includes an essay "Close to the Wind" by the writer and journalist Jānis Melbārzdis, which was written in 1984 as a portrait of Eduards Kalniņš.
The gallery has created an exhibition to coincide with this event, which serves as an extension of the newly published book. It will allow visitors to get acquainted not only with specially selected paintings by Kalniņš, but also with the author's photographs, which form the basic structure of this exhibition.
Through the black and white shots we can see scenes from Kaugurciems as well as painterly views from Italian cities; greet the gondoliers of Venice, Kalniņš' wife, the pianist Mirdza Puriņa posing among Sicilian cactuses and Niklāvs Strunke, who has devoted himself to plein air painting on the beach of Kaugurciems.
