Sarkandaugava district guide

Sarkandaugava, located just north of Riga’s city center, is a neighborhood rich in history and character. Incorporated into Riga’s city limits in 1828, it quickly grew into one of the city's key industrial districts while also blossoming into a cultural hub. Today, it’s home to several beautiful parks and museums that showcase the vibrant heritage and historical legacy of Riga.

Department of National History Museum of Latvia Dauderi

Before World War II, this grand estate was home to Latvia's president, Kārlis Ulmanis, and since 1990, it has served as a museum.

The Dauderi Museum offers a permanent exhibition dedicated to Latvia's history, with a special focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors can explore a wide array of artifacts, from ancient collections to materials from modern history. Sarkandaugava is also notable for its industrial heritage, with one of the most striking examples being the Provodnik factory. The factory produced a wide range of rubber products, from car tires to household items, and quickly became a major employer, drawing people from across Latvia and driving Sarkandaugava’s rapid development.

While the Provodnik factory is no longer operational, its grounds are still in use today, serving as warehouses and production spaces for smaller businesses. The historic factory buildings stand as proud witnesses to Sarkandaugava’s industrial past, captivating visitors with their majestic architecture and industrial charm. There are plans to revitalize part of the area, transforming it into a multifunctional complex that blends the neighborhood's rich history with modern needs, continuing Sarkandaugava’s story in a new light.
